Diana Vreeland, aka the high priestess of style, once famously responded to journalist George Plimpton’s question, “how does one become Diana Vreeland?” with the unforgettable line, “the first thing to do, my love, is to arrange to be born in Paris”.

Vreeland loved the city, its luxury and glamour, describing it as a beautiful theatre.

But to enjoy the performance, one must know where to stay..

Today Paris offers an ever changing, ever increasing choice of hotels, the culmination of talented Parisian interior designers working alongside service-savvy management. In our third issue, Esensual Living embraces the style visionaries who, as well as remodelling the hospitality landscape, have offered to share with us their well-kept Parisian secrets.

We asked the following three key questions:

1. WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES PARIS AN ENIGMATIC SPRINGTIME DESTINATION?

2. HOW DOES YOUR HOTEL FULFILL THE PARISIAN DREAM?

3. WHAT ARE YOUR BEST-KEPT SECRETS OF PARIS?

ORA ITO

Ora Ito is one of today’s most innovative designers, currently working in furniture, architecture, product and interior design. Celebrated for fusing elegant and futuristic style, Ora Ito designs for brands such as Christofle, Swatch and Heineken. This bold fusion is evident in his recent project, Hotel O, owned by the Elegancia Group. Located on the quiet rue Herold in the 1st arrondissement next to Place des Victoires, Hotel O comprises 29 rooms each with a unique atmosphere

1. Walking through the streets of Paris is a way to explore its history. There are so many aspects to Paris, aesthetic, historical, romantic and patrimonial. Paris brims with a special charm due to the fact that it has never outgrown the human scale. I see Paris as an entity composed of many villages, all different… a mosaic of changing moods.

2. What I love about the Hotel O is that you can walk almost everywhere. It is like a miniature platform where you can relax and enjoy yourself after a day in Paris. It is a contemporary hotel located in an old neighbourhood - I enjoy this contrast. My approach was to represent French style through a world of sensations – such as revisiting the canopied bed - with a touch of Japan as a departure from the traditional.

3. INo secrets - I enjoy places that are elegant and timeless such as l’Hotel Costes.

PIERRE-YVES ROCHON

Interior Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon is the master talent behind some of the world’s most famous hotels - the Shangri-La in Paris, the Savoy in London and the Monte Carlo Bay Resort. Known for creating supremely luxurious and elegant decors that work in harmony with the environment, Rochon’s recent Parisian gem is the new Prince de Galles, a Starwood Hotels&Resort and a Luxury Collection Hotel, where you’ll get an intoxicating whiff of the glamorous 1930s alongside contemporary comfort. Located on the Right Bank in the 8th arrondissement on Avenue George V, Prince de Galles is conveniently close to the Champs Elysées.

1. It is the amalgam of 800 years of culture, style and luxury that makes Paris so unique and attractive. The French are very lucky and the Parisians even more so although they don’t often admit it!

2. Creativity doesn’t exist without dreams. At the Prince de Galles our dream was to create a Parisian palace, evoking the extreme sophistication of the pre-war period of the 1930s & 40s with soft hues, mirrors, Macassar ebony and steel, and combining it with the latest high-tech developments.. the best of both worlds.

3. The Opera Garnier may not be the most secret place in town but it is a haven of beauty and mystery. I love the beautiful music and singing, the sumptuous restoration of the foyer and the ceiling by Chagall… it is like being inside an enchanted castle.

JULIEN REVAH

L’Hôtel, the Left Bank landmark located in the chic area of St Germain, is where Oscar Wilde lived until his death. Today L’Hôtel is a rendez-vous for the rich and famous, even more so since its stunning redecoration by iconic interior designer Jacques Garcia. Owned by A Curious Group of Hotels, a British company known for its chic lodgings for the culturally curious, L’Hôtel has become a hideaway for sophisticated globetrotters.
L’Hôtel Director Julien Revah tells us about his very own Paris.

1. The skies turn from thick grey to blue and it’s as if the silhouette of the buildings appear out of nowhere, carved into the aqua marine skyline. The city landscape springs to life, street cafés fill with people, the gardens and squares begin to bud and blossom. This sense of renewed life is captivating.

2. L’Hôtel perfectly encapsulates the quintessential French charm and glamour of the Left Bank. Set amidst the cultural riches, bohemian soul and high fashion of Saint-Germain des Près, it is an idyllic Parisian destination.

3. One of Paris best kept secrets is Place Dauphine, at the foot of the Palais de Justice, a square completely hidden in the middle of the Seine surrounded by charming restaurants and cafes. In the summer months over a glass of rosé, you can sit outside and watch locals play pétanque. My favourite viewing place is from an outdoor table at Le Caveau du Palais, which serves simple, well-prepared food in a rustic setting.

OSCAR ONO JUNIOR

Oscar Ono’s exclusive organic wood and leather flooring makes you want to take your shoes off. In just 10 years, the company has become the benchmark for exquisite, high-end flooring, earning a reputation worldwide for both private and commercial design projects including restaurants and hotels. Art director and designer Oscar Ono Junior recently completed the Hotel Armoni in Paris for the Elegancia Group, located in the more residential area of the 17th arrondissement, near l’Arc de Triomphe. This is a small and intimate addition to Paris’s hotel scene and an ideal stopover for businessmen and women seeking high technology, comfort and aesthetics, with easy access to Charles de Gaulle!

1. Spring is the time of year when Paris wakes up. People come out of hibernation, settling on the terraces for drinks and endless conversations with friends. There is something so delicious and new in the air that makes one feel more creative and more romantic…

2. I create hotels that blend harmoniously with the neighbourhood, capturing the spirit of the quartier. This is important to me as Paris has so many different atmospheres. My aim is to carry the spirit of the past into the present.

3. I have several secrets… the garden terrace on the roof of the Hôtel Raphael that opens out to the unforgettable Paris sky, or the Café Marly under the Louvre colonnade facing towards the Pei Pyramide for the perfect mix of past and contemporary history, or an outside table at the Restaurant du Palais-Royal where you can feel the spirit of Colette floating by. On rue Montmartre, La Bocca has the most delicious Italian cooking and the best welcome, or for a romantic rendez-vous, I love the Hôtel Vendôme bar at 1, Place Vendôme (the perfect location) for its ’haute couture’ style of décor.

« If you like the recent Hotel Armoni you might like the Essential range by Alexandre Turpault. »
